Celebrating vibrant faith & gracious hospitality
HRUC Centenary - 2012
This year is a significant one for Highfield Road Uniting. We turn 100 but stangely we don't feel our age. In fact we are a community of Vibrant Faith and Generous Hospitality.
The first weekend in August will be when we see people coming from north and south and east and west to join us in celebrating this anniversary. There will be many different events to cater for different interests and ages.
On Saturday 4th we will be holding a Tennis Tournament so dust off your racquets and put on your runners for a round robin being organised by Anna Vandenberg. If that sounds too energetic we will also be holding a Sunday School Picnic with egg and spoon races, three-legged races, sack races and all the games and things that we associate with Sunday School picnics. This is for the children and the children at heart, so if you are over age but just want to sit and watch the fun, you are most welcome to bring a picnic lunch and join us.
In the evening there will be a special dinner in the Church Hall where concert items will entertain us between courses and where we will be able to see a DVD display of old photos that will take us through the years of Highfield's history.
On Sunday our Centenary Service will begin at 10:00am to allow people coming from a distance to arrive on time. There will be opportunity to hear some personal stories of times shared and memories aired. There will also be candles lit for each decade of the church's long life and also one for the future to come; history will merge with vision for the future. After the service we will dedicate the water feature covered in mosaics made by the children and they will have a part to play in that dedication. We also hope to have a time capsule where we invite you to bring something to put inside.
The luncheon following will be a time to catch up with people and extend into the afternoon giving time for people to meet old friends, look at photos and memorabilia and enjoy being together again as the extended family of the church.
The celebrations will conclude with a short closing service at 3:00pm after which people are invited to stay as long as they want and continue conversations. This will also be an opportunity for people to make a contribution to our Music Foundation that we hope will grow sufficiently to enable us to continue the quality of music people enjoy when coming to Highfield Road Uniting.
